- ➤ SHALOM, a church-run shelter in Middletown, will begin hosting the homeless for nine weeks starting Jan. 4 with daily 5 p.m. transports for meals and safe shelter. Hamilton staff are reviewing a proposal to convert a vacant county building into an emergency shelter — a potential $7.56 million investment for the community. Journal-News
- ➤ A Butler County boy is organizing a Christmas toy drive to collect gifts for children in need. The drive will be held at local community centers later this season with details on donation drop-off times to be announced. FOX 19 Now
- ➤ Officials closed the bypass valve on Friday, Dec. 5 (after a year of emptiness) to let Sharon Lake begin refilling in Hamilton County as part of a $15 million park improvement project. Floating fishing docks, a kayak launch and a temporary boathouse at Lakeside Lodge will be added in summer. WLWT

- ➤ Great Parks of Hamilton County has begun refilling Sharon Lake with natural water while the area remains closed to the public — visitors can watch the rising water at Sharon Woods Harbor, and officials say it will reopen in late February once park improvements are complete. FOX 19 Now
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Five Ohio institutions researching pediatric cancer will receive $5M from a state budget signed this summer (Nationwide Children's, Cincinnati Children's, the Cleveland Clinic, Dayton Children's, and Maple Tree Cancer Alliance in Cedarville), Governor DeWine announced at Nationwide Children's Hospital on Thursday. The funding will improve early detection efforts. WVXU
