Good morning, Hamilton. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 12th of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Veterans Day was observed on Tuesday, Nov. 11 as Greater Cincinnati held ceremonies and offered special deals for military members. Local events included an 11 a.m. service at Eden Park’s Vietnam Memorial and free admission at the Cincinnati Zoo while many restaurants and shops provided discounted meals and offers (such as free items at Denny’s, Applebee’s, and Starbucks).  WLWT
  • Stephen Wysong, a 69-year-old Army veteran from Mount Healthy—who served in Germany in the 1970s—was honored as Veteran of the Year by a Goodwill support group after he spent two years homeless and five months in a veteran dorm while finding an apartment in Indiana; he now urges others in need to seek help from similar programs.  Local 12 News

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Lakota East High School choir performed at a national veterans ceremony in Washington, D.C. Tuesday with shows at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. and will lay a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery today as part of planned visits to key sites. The same group—invited to perform at Pearl Harbor last December—will visit other historic sites.  Local 12 News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Grocery shoppers in the Tri-State saw shifts in staple prices from September to October as apples rose by 24 cents and canned soup and spinach went up due to a poor Honeycrisp season and tin mill steel shortages (50% tariff) reported by the UC Alpaugh Family Economic Center. Deli turkey prices increased by more than a dollar per pound while eggs, chicken, tomatoes and grapes dropped in price, and chocolate costs rose because global cocoa shortages spurred by heavy rains pushed up production costs.  Local 12 News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • NOAA said a strong solar storm will head toward Earth and may light up Ohio skies with northern lights — a severe geomagnetic storm watch was issued Tuesday with a NOAA map showing Ohio in the view line. The storm comes as the sun reaches its peak in its 11-year cycle and follows similar displays seen in 2024.  WLWT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio’s 20th Safe Haven Baby Box was installed Tuesday afternoon at Hamilton Fire Station 22, 77 Pershing Ave — the first one in Butler County — with city, state and federal officials attending the dedication to give mothers a safe, anonymous option for newborns. Mayor Pat Moeller and Councilmember Michael Ryan said this 395th box placed statewide, which has helped 71 newborns, shows a strong local commitment to protecting the vulnerable.  Journal-News
  • The Garver Family Farm in Middletown, a near-century-old farm, faces closure as Butler County disputes its farm-to-table market and winery for operating commercial features in an agricultural zone. Michael Garver said they initially received county approval and will appeal the decision — if the appeal fails, they may face fines or closure.  Local 12 News
  • Hamilton County Veterans Service Commission held a Veterans Day ceremony on Tuesday, November 11—honoring Cold War veterans who served after World War II by giving them a commemorative coin and help connecting with benefits. Veterans met for coffee at 10:30 a.m.—and they laid a wreath at 11:30 a.m. near a Berlin Wall display.  WLWT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Feed the Soul is a local nonprofit that gives Hamilton County students fresh fruits and vegetables to help them stay healthy and succeed in school.
