Good morning, Hamilton. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 1st of November.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Hamilton resident Rose Hurley launched a cardboard box donation campaign today to help families facing SNAP uncertainty—boxes are set up in over 30 local shops including Municipal Brew Works and Pet Wants. She will start the collection and distribution after the Bengals game on Sunday while urging neighbors to donate essential items like baby formula, shelf-stable foods, and hygiene products.  WLWT
  • Second graders at Linden Elementary in Hamilton are collecting school supplies and donations to help schools in Jamaica and Haiti recover from Hurricane Melissa’s severe impact — community members can drop off items at the school on Hoadley Avenue until Nov. 10.  FOX 19 Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Lakota Local Schools has proposed a levy on the Nov 4 ballot to cut operating costs by reducing the number of school buildings from 21 to 16 — a plan that includes demolishing older ones, renovating some, and building at least four new schools. If passed, the levy will cost about $208 per $100,000 of appraised property value each year and collections will start in 2029.  WLWT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Halloween in Hamilton, the rain had ended and the weather was mostly clear with temperatures rising from the upper 30s in the morning to the mid 50s by trick or treat — scattered showers began late Saturday night and continued into early Sunday.  WLWT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Federal SNAP funding will run out tomorrow as the government shutdown continues through the weekend. Hamilton County commissioners repurposed $200,000 in COVID funds while Gov. DeWine signed an order for $7 million to support food banks and $18 million for Ohio Works First families — tens of thousands of users will receive an extra weekly benefit as some local businesses warn of rising challenges.  WLWT

SPORTS NEWS

  • A new Buddy Up program will make tennis more accessible for Hamilton residents by pairing beginners with experienced players (program details are expected soon).  FOX 19 Now
  • Ryder Hooks, a senior running back at Lakota East, rushed 28 times for 290 yards and five touchdowns in a 42-28 upset over Lakota West, making him the school's all-time leading rusher. His coach Jon Kitna called him the best football player in the state — despite his smaller size — and Hooks said he cares more about wins than his personal stats.  Journal-News
