GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Nearly 40,000 Butler County residents who rely on SNAP will not receive their benefits Saturday due to the ongoing government shutdown, and county offices will keep processing new applications to enable payment when funds resume. State Rep. Humphrey introduced House Bill 502 on Oct. 7 to redirect funds to cover these benefits, but it is unlikely to take effect before the money runs out. Journal-News

- ➤ Hamilton County officials warned that SNAP benefits will run out soon and are urging federal and state lawmakers to reopen the government and use gap funding to support food pantries. Over 97,000 local residents rely on these benefits, and commissioners are asking state leaders to tap the rainy-day fund (as with Freestore Foodbank) to help families until funding is restored.
