EDUCATION NEWS

  • After eighth grader Joyce lost her phone and could not find it in her locker or backpack, Principal Linda Burwinkle of Liberty Junior School (LJS) checked security footage and confirmed the student had accidentally thrown it away during lunch on Friday, September 19. She then recovered the phone from an overflowing dumpster in hot 90-degree weather to help her student.  Local 12 News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Ohio food banks remain open during the federal shutdown—officials say SNAP and WIC benefits are on track this October—but warn that an extended shutdown may affect access to these programs in the future.  WVXU
  • State transportation officials said roadside crew collisions have reached 87 or more this year in Hamilton and nearby counties and they expect more accidents if distracted driving continues—workers ask drivers to follow the move over law for safety. Crew member Jennifer Nelson recalled nearly being involved in a crash on Aug. 14 and stressed the need for drivers to give crews enough room as required by law.  Journal-News
  • Hebrew Union College and the Ohio Attorney General reached an agreement on rare texts in the Klau Library after concerns arose from a Sotheby’s visit in 2024. The legal deal filed in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court requires the college to provide a list of special collection texts+ notify the AG 45 days in advance before a sale+ and restricts use of sale funds to acquiring new items unless a two-thirds board vote declares acute financial need.  WVXU

HEALTH NEWS

  • A new invasive species—the Asian longhorned tick—was found in the Tri-State area after a dog from Middletown was brought to Oxford Veterinary Hospital; vet Chantel Raghu said the tick reproduces quickly and pet owners are advised to use prevention and keep lawns trimmed to lower the risk of Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever.  Local 12 News

  • Fairfield High School senior Riley Cunningham—who has scored nine goals and recorded seven assists in the Greater Miami Conference—said his extra effort helped him become one of the top offensive players while coach Manny Adjei expects his work to boost his final season.  Journal-News
