Good morning, Hamilton. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 1st of October.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A Crosby Township family of four was saved when neighbor Ben Braun jumped the fence — using a sprinkler to control flames on the back deck that started at about 5:30 a.m. Thursday, with investigators saying a pool pump vacuum sparked the fire before firefighters arrived.  WLWT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Liberty Junior High School, a student's lost cell phone sent Lakota Schools officials into action last week. Principal Linda Burwinkel and Assistant Principal Hannah Klotz dived into a dumpster—sifting through 30 bags of trash—to grab the phone before the garbage truck came.  WLWT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, a bipartisan law stops Ohio police departments from using ticket quotas for performance reviews, promotions, transfers and disciplinary actions—allowing officers to use their discretion during stops and enabling the Attorney General’s Office to investigate any quota-related issues.  WVXU
  • Ohio's minimum wage will rise on Jan. 1, with nontipped workers earning $11 instead of $10.70 and tipped workers earning $5.50 instead of $5.35. The new rate will affect businesses with over $405,000 in annual receipts while smaller companies and young workers continue to earn $7.25—this change follows a constitutional rule that ties wage increases to inflation.  WLWT
  • Butler County commissioners voted 2-1 not to dissolve the county's independent emergency management agency — with TC Rogers and Cindy Carpenter supporting the current EMA — after safety leaders warned that changing control could weaken emergency responses. Local police, firefighters and hospital staff had backed the agency at a commission meeting.  WLWT
