Good morning, Hamilton. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 25th of July.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Reds Community Makeover Day is planned as a local event where volunteers work to clean up and repair community spaces in Hamilton—organizers say the event will boost neighborhood pride and safety.  FOX 19 Now
  • At the Butler County Fair in Hamilton, 12 contestants ate about 45 pints of ice cream—Michael Thom won by finishing a slushie and 4.5 pints while 14-year-old Jonathan Peck said he would pace himself next year. Proceeds were donated to the Joe Nuxhall Miracle League Field, which hosts Nuxy Bash at Groh Lane field tomorrow at 7 p.m.  Journal-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • West Chester Twp trustees raised concerns over Lakota Schools’ master facilities plan that will reduce transitions for more than 17,000 students by consolidating grade bands, closing older schools, and adding four new elementary buildings with school locations still to be decided. The plan is to be funded by a $506.4 million bond issue and a levy that will lower tax collections to no more than 2.66 mills—resulting in roughly $93 more in taxes per $100,000—prompting worry among trustees about longer commutes and higher costs for older residents.  Journal-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Another hearing is scheduled Thursday for Ayman Soliman (a former Cincinnati Children's chaplain) detained by ICE after his temporary restraining order expired yesterday. The status conference in Cleveland will decide the next steps in his immigration case after his asylum was revoked last month while his legal team denies any ties to terrorism and he remains in Butler County Jail.  WLWT
  • A report by Rebuild Local News and Muck Rack found that the nation has lost 75% of its local journalists since 2002, leaving Ohio with roughly 7.9 reporters per 100,000 residents—below the national average of 8.1. The study warns that fewer local reporters may lead to less coverage of important government meetings—limiting how much residents learn about decisions that affect their communities.  WVXU
