COMMUNITY NEWS

  • La Soupe and Last Mile Food Rescue are partnering to improve food access in Hamilton as Last Mile studies La Soupe’s operations this summer and coordinates deliveries this fall. The pilot aims to boost support for households with food needs (15% now face food insecurity) and will end this year.  WVXU

ECONOMY NEWS

  • GasBuddy reports that Ohio gas prices dropped by 23.9 cents from last week to an average of $4.51, though they remain above last year’s levels. A map shows the cheapest deals in Dayton, Springfield and Butler County + Hamilton’s Casey’s offers fuel at $4.11 per gallon.  Journal-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hamilton County Juvenile Court launched a program (The Summer of Discovery) that requires kids to obtain a library card, rec center or YMCA membership, and bring their report card to court to discover local opportunities. The initiative targeting 100 to 150 youths excludes those detained or charged with violence.  WVXU

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • After heavy rain from May 25 to May 27, Miami Conservancy District activated the Germantown, Englewood, Taylorsville & Huffman dams to store floodwater and protect local communities. Floodgates in Hamilton & Middletown remain closed while staff monitor river levels around the clock.  Journal-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Hamilton will hold a street-naming ceremony at Marcum Park at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 30 to honor former mayor Don Ryan. The event recognizes his work in downtown revitalization + education partnerships during his tenure from 2002 to 2010.  Journal-News

HEALTH NEWS

  • A study by AARP Ohio shows 25% of adults are caregivers for aging parents and neighbors. The report says most caregivers pay from their own money and face financial stress as they balance work and care.  WVXU
  • 27-year-old Hannah Broermann, diagnosed with ALS after nearly two years of tests, will throw a ceremonial first pitch at the Cincinnati Reds’ Lou Gehrig Day on Jun. 2. Community organizers will also host the Hope for Hannah Benefit on Jul. 18 at Badin High School to support her care.  WLWT
  • Hamilton County health officials issued an overdose alert after 12 suspected overdose deaths occurred between May 20 and May 26, with 4 deaths on Saturday, May 23 and 5 emergency visits on Monday, May 25+ officials urged anyone needing help to use county health services.  WLWT
