COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Butler County will honor veterans on Memorial Day, May 25, with parades and ceremonies. In Hamilton, a wreath-laying at 9:15 a.m. at the Soldiers, Sailors and Pioneers Monument leads a parade ending at Greenwood Cemetery; other events take place in Fairfield, Franklin, Germantown, Middletown, West Chester and at Kings Island.  Journal-News

CULTURE NEWS

  • This weekend in Butler and Hamilton counties, residents can enjoy various events. Hamilton hosts Ink and Drink at Pyramid Hill on May 22 and a free concert on May 28, while Butler offers Cars and Coffee (May 24), the Ohio Toy and Comic Show (May 24) and Taste of Cincinnati (May 22-25).  Journal-News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cincinnati Bengals rookies visited Ridgeway Elementary School in Hamilton to meet students and share experiences. A severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect until 10 p.m. EDT in Hamilton and nearby counties (Butler, Warren, and others), according to the National Weather Service.  Journal-News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • From May 18 through May 25, state troopers from six states, including Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Pennsylvania & West Virginia, will patrol highways and rural roads to enforce seat belt use and improve safety. Kentucky State Police captain Scott Lengle said the project targets drivers and passengers not buckled up.  WLWT

  • Kroger Homestyle Cheese Garlic Croutons sold in Ohio have been recalled for possible salmonella contamination linked to milk powder from California Dairies, Inc. (affected best-by dates run from Feb to Apr and the recall spans 17 states).  Local 12 News
  • At Independence Elementary, teacher Emily Colbert noticed nonverbal sixth grader Rio showing unusual fatigue and thirst and urged his parents to visit the emergency room, where doctors diagnosed him with Type 1 diabetes. His parents say her quick action likely saved his life in Liberty Township.  Local 12 News
  • St. Elizabeth hosted an event Monday to celebrate advances in lung cancer detection. Brittany Hamilton, 39 with no smoking history who first thought her side pain was a kidney stone, was diagnosed at stage one from a CT scan and is now cancer-free after surgery.  WLWT
