Good morning, Hamilton. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 26th of April.
ENVIRONMENT NEWS
- ➤ Meadow Ridge Metropark is a large 456-acre park that used to be the Weatherwax Golf Course. MetroParks restored 40 acres of golf course features — reshaping greens, tees and sand traps, planting native prairies and trees, and removing invasive honeysuckle — to create a natural space for birding, fishing and hiking. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ State Senator Bill Blessing and Governor Mike DeWine have proposed raising the tax on sports bets from 20% to 36% to fund a permanent arena and stadium projects fund statewide — the measure is expected to yield about $160 million per year while most Hamilton County residents will not see a tax increase. Lawmakers have until June 30 to finalize the budget — the proposal was removed from the House version. Local 12 News
- ➤ The House budget eliminated a 30-year-old commission for campaign finance cases — now campaign finance complaints will go to the Secretary of State or local election boards. House Finance Chair Brian Stewart said the panel was too slow, and the Senate will hold hearings on the plan next week. WVXU
- ➤ Butler County officials are discussing a hiring freeze to slow spending as the county faces a shaky economy with falling stock markets and rising budget costs; Commissioner Don Dixon supports a plan that would allow only essential replacements while a vote is set for Tuesday (a move to keep future expenses in check). Journal-News
- ➤ The city council will vote Monday at 7 p.m. on a Marsh Park masterplan that includes new paths, boardwalks—along with improved kayak docks—amid disagreement over including a restaurant option. A survey showed 68 percent of respondents favor a café/brewery, while some residents fear a restaurant will harm the park's natural feel. Journal-News
