ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Heavy rain has led to high water and landslides in greater Cincinnati, including an early-morning landslide that closed about a three-mile stretch of Mary Ingles Highway in Northern Kentucky and a partial blockage of Hill Street in Mount Adams. The Hamilton County Engineer's Office said high water closed Lawrenceburg Road between US 50 and Suspension Bridge Road in Whitewater Township—crews are working to assess the dangerous conditions as the rain continues this weekend.  WLWT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • House Bill 203, called Aspen’s Law, is under review in the Ohio State House Judiciary Committee to stiffen penalties for distracted driving in active school zones. The measure would increase charges and fines—upgrading some offenses from misdemeanors to felonies—after two crashes involving Lakota Local School District students, including the fatal collision that killed Aspen Runnels near Lakota East High School.  Journal-News
  • State lawmakers met with Butler County taxpayers last week to outline plans for long-term property tax relief as proposals target changes in the system (House Bill 28 passed 62-to-30 on March 19) and lower school district tax rates. They said taxes will not drop immediately and are expected to climb by about 20 to 25% after the 2026 reappraisal, with 528 districts holding $10.5 billion in carryover (a key factor in the new relief measure).  Journal-News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Public health experts and pediatricians say that measles vaccination rates in more than 150 area schools remain below the herd immunity threshold—only one-third of local elementary schools meet the 92% standard—raising the risk of an outbreak if a case is introduced. They note that increasing non-medical exemptions and overall low immunization levels continue to heighten concerns across regional school districts.  Springfield News-Sun
