CRIME NEWS

  • Samuel Mumyarutete, a refugee from Congo living in Woodlawn, was fatally shot by a Lockland officer along I-75 on March 19th after being released on his own recognizance for an assault charge—and his family now seeks clear answers over whether he was part of a police chase or simply an innocent bystander.  FOX 19 Now

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents who have Bradford Pear trees in their yards should trim the main trunk with a chainsaw—then pour herbicide within ten minutes to stop regrowth. The tree, banned from sale in Ohio since January 2023, has spread quickly through birds and warmer weather.  WLWT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Butler County Sheriff is sending 10 deputies for ICE training to give them the same arrest authority as federal agents so they can work with local police to enforce immigration laws. The training will begin in the next few weeks—after the jail started holding ICE detainees on March 5, officials say this move is part of a broader effort to crack down on illegal immigration.  WLWT
  • Butler County commissioners last week debated a grassroots group's plan led by Commissioner Cindy Carpenter to form an independent board for managing HUD funds for homeless housing — officials argued that shifting control to service providers would reduce taxpayer accountability. The group claims Butler County is underfunded compared to urban areas and the county plans to hire a homeless coordinator while scheduling another summit.  Journal-News
  • A $1.2 million settlement was reached in a class action lawsuit by nearly 500 people+some held more than 48 hours at the jail before seeing a judge in Fairfield. Judge Joyce Campbell retired last fall after 25 years+new policies now require hearings within 48 hours.  FOX 19 Now
